We are pleased to launch a new StoryMap titled Air Pollution and Health: The Global Impacts of Fossil Fuels. Created by HEI's State of Global Air initiative, this first-of-its-kind interactive web resource provides a global overview of the role of fossil fuel combustion on air quality and health. The StoryMap spotlights the interlinkages between air quality, energy and climate action, emphasizing that integrated control strategies can help reduce population exposures, promote better public health, and mitigate climate change.

Key highlights:

  • Air Quality: Contributions from combustion of fossil fuels, including coal, oil and natural gas, to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in countries around the world.
  • Health Impacts: In-depth insights into the health impacts associated with exposure to air pollution from fossil fuel combustion.
  • Global Perspectives: A globally comparable dataset, allowing for cross-country comparisons.

The StoryMap is based on data from the State of Global Air 2020 Report and the HEI Research Report 210, Global Burden of Disease from Major Air Pollution Sources (GBD-MAPS): A Global Approach. We invite you to explore the data and insights provided in this resource.
